OVERVIEW

Guhagar, literally means cave house, is a temple town in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra state and in all respects with many prominent temples in and around. Temples dedicated to various forms of Lord Shiva like Vyadeshwar, Talkeshwar, Udaleshwar, Velneshwar, Balkeshwar and a temple of Ufrata Ganapati are some of the important temples here. Chandika Mandir is another well known temple close by. The renowned Vashishti River flows nearby. Thousands of devotees reach Guhagar to offer prayers in these temples and to get blessed by the view of magnificent forms of Lord Shiva.


HOW TO REACH

By Air
Nearest airport is Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, which is nearly 300 km from Guhagar. Mumbai (Bombay) is well connected to all major cities in India and also connected to many cities abroad. Taxi services are the one direct travel possibility from Mumbai to Guhagar. It costs about Rs 4500.


By Bus
Many Maharastra Government public buses are operating between Guhagar and Many cities nearby. Tourist Volvo buses are regular between Mumbai and Chiplun (40 km from Guhagar) costing about Rs 400.

By Train
Nearest railhead is Chiplun railway station in the Konkan railway region. It is connected to Mumbai and Goa. From the railway station to Guhagar is about 40 km and it costs nearly Rs 700 by Taxi.

Anjanvel

Anjanvel is an estuary island is the southern most bank of Vashishti River at the confluence of Arabian Sea with the river and is a nearby village of Guhagar city. Anjanvel port is located at this place and is considered as an all weather natural seaport. This seaport offers facilities for shipbuilding and old ship breakings and maintenances.


Anjanvel is an orthodox fishing village with traditional fishing practices blended with modern fishing boats with engine. While visiting here one can get the real experience of interacting with fishermen community. Anjanvel is village is highly attractive with lush green vegetations, undulated hilly terrains and calm and cool village ambience.


Gopalgad Hill
Gopalgad hill is a scenic, trekking place located in the Anjanvel village in Guhagar. There is a historical fort known as Gopalgad fort, overlooking downhill. The fort is assumed to be built by Siddis during the beginning period of 16th century. Shivaji Maharaj later captured the fort in 1660. An adventurous trek for about a mile through the hilly trails will lead the visitor to the top of the ruined fort.

The hill breasts two small but attractive temples and a lighthouse at the top.
